Why does my marriage contract need to be certified translated?

Answer:

If you are married, Spanish law assumes that you buy property together with the joint marital assets.

In principle, if you are married under the regime of separation of assets/marital settlement, you have no common assets with your partner. You must be able to prove the absence of these common assets through the translated (registered) marriage contract. Without this translation, your property title cannot be registered exclusively in your name.

If you are married under the statutory system, a translation is not necessary.
